Greek Islands

The lucky soul who coined the phrase “not a worry in the world” was probably on an island in Greece when he said it. Island life is a utopian existence. This is the land of white-washed buildings and deep blue seas. Yet Greece’s beauty is more than skin deep. When it comes to the pace of the islands, Greece is a carbon copy of the Caribbean (except that all the beaches are topless). The need to rush anywhere disappears the minute one steps onto the ferry dock and the large, ship slowly departs for yet another destination.

Corfu

Corfu has long been a favourite destination for north Europeans. Generally considered to be one of the most beautiful Greek Islands, the lush green Corfu is also called the ‘Emerald Island’. Corfu was the last stop for legendary Odysseus and it has lots to offer the visitor. The many years of tourism have taken their toll unfortunately, and some find the island too busy in peak season. The turquoise sea and green nature are exceptional though, and the island is still a recommended cruise destination. Corfu Town is the charming capital of Corfu. It has borne the brunt of package tourism, but rest assured, you can get your souvlakis and frappes just as you would anywhere else in Greece. Glyfada is regarded by most of the locals as the island’s best beach, and always attracts a lot of visiting boats. Palestrikaeo is definitely one of the most scenic parts of Corfu with its turqouise coves and pine covered hills.

Mykonos

Mykonos is like a cubist painting with its white buildings, golden beaches and clear blue sky. It is young, hip and hedonistic and at times decadent. Over the years, it has gone from sleepy fishing villages, to the abode of the jetset, and is now settling into mainstream package-holiday tourism. Perhaps too crowded at times, it is nevertheless an iconic part of the Greek experience. Mykonos Town has wonderful shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, crowded along its white-washed alleys draped with grape vines and bougainvilleas.

Croatia

Croatia lies at the heart of the Mediterranean, the Alps and the Pannonian plains. The coast of a thousand isles has become a popular cruising destination in recent years but the crystal clear waters and protected and deserted anchorages are still far from crowded. Although its main attraction is the Adriatic coast and islands, inland Croatia is full of interesting destinations for daytrips ashore such as the historic towns of Zadar, Sibenik, Trogir, Split, and Dubrovnik, the woods of Gorski Kotar, the Baroque castles and thermal spas of Hrvatsko Zagorjeor or the sparkling lakes in the mountainous region between Northern Croatia and the Croatian coast.

With an average of 7 hours of sunshine per day throughout the year (12 hours in July), the city of Split is one of the sunniest cities in Europe. By its lush Mediterranean and subtropic vegetation (palms, agaves, cactuses) it has since time immemorial attracted people from all over the world.
